Dough Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon plus 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup warm water (110° to 115°)
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1/2 cup warm 2% milk (110° to 115°)
- 1 large egg
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
Cinnamon Filling Ingredients:
- 1/2 stick butter, softened
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
Cheese Filling Ingredients:
- 1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese (softened)
- 1/4 cup granulated white sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Glaze Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 4 tsp milk
Directions:
First make the dough. In a large bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar in warm water. Add butter, milk, egg, salt, remaining sugar and 2 cups flour. Beat in mixer until smooth. Switch mixer to the dough hook and stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough. Remove from bowl.
Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
In the meantime mix the cinnamon and cream cheese fillings. For the cinnamon: add softened butter, brown sugar and cinnamon to a medium-sized bowl and combine with a fork until the mixture is a thick paste. Set aside.
For the cream cheese filling: In a medium bowl, combine softened cream cheese with white sugar and vanilla extract. Mixture should be creamy and smooth when finished (like cheesecake batter.) Set aside.
Punch dough down. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; divide in half. Roll each portion into a long rectangle. Cut each rectangle into 6-8 strips. Stretch each strip as long and thin as you can. Then spread the cinnamon mixture on the dough with your hands and a greased spatula. Twist each strip and then curl each up to make a round shape.
Now you want to get in there with your fingers and spread out the dough some to make room for the filling. Just pull and stretch and make a nice dent in the middle. Place on cookie sheet that has been sprayed with nonstick spray. Top each coil with about 2 tablespoons of cream cheese filling.
Preheat oven to 350°. Bake 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and add glaze. For the glaze, in a bowl, combine powdered sugar, vanilla and milk. Stir until smooth and drizzle over each warm danishes. Enjoy your breakfast!
